Using Your Laptop on Holiday

Posted on 14 June 2010 by admin

When you’re on holiday, it can sometimes be difficult to check email, Facebook, Twitter, or manage any other aspects of your digital life. However, it’s very possible to stay connected, even when you’re traveling to remote areas.

Many travelers look for WiFi hotspots, which are public areas that allow computers to connect via WiFi. These are usually available in businesses such as coffee shops and major hotels. Some cities also offer WiFi for their entire populaces. While WiFi is certainly a fast way to connect, there are some drawbacks; most public WiFi areas are fairly unsecure, and entering in personal information can be a bad idea. If your computer has a “public” WiFi setting, make sure that you use it.

It’s also common to use mobile broadband to connect. Many phones have mobile broadband, for instance, the very popular iPhone, which uses the 3G and Edge networks. There are also mobile broadband-connected laptops and special USB (Universal Serial Bus) connectors that can connect to mobile broadband. This service isn’t very expensive, all things considered, and can be purchased on a monthly basis. Some services allow their users to buy mobile broadband one week at a time, which can be better for infrequent travelers. Different providers offer different amounts of coverage, but they’re always a great way to stay connected on the road.
