Jewels of the Mediterranean

Posted on 29 June 2010 by admin

It may sound like I’m about to talk about a cruise ship, but it’s a lot more than that. The Mediterranean Sea is probably one of the strangest holiday destinations that I can think of. Everything about it makes it sound like it wouldn’t be a very agreeable or pleasant experience. It’s surrounded by industrialized countries, it’s not that close to the Equator line as many other popular Summer holiday destinations and it’s positively crowded during the Summer months. All of this would make me want to run away at first glance. But going to the Mediterranean has delivered stunning and incredibly fun and relaxing holidays every single time. This may sound like advertising, but hey, how would I get money for advertising the whole Mediterranean Sea? I’m being honest here.

The joy and biggest beauty of the Mediterranean Sea are its islands. Surely enough, there are great beaches in Italy, in the South of France and Spain and even in Tunisia and in Egypt. But the true glory of this inner Sea lies, like I said, in its islands. And especially the Baleares and the Greek Islands.

Spending time in Greek islands, be it in the smaller islands or in the large ones like Crete will see you fully immersed in a world that’s only really there in movies, or so you thought. Crete and Cyprus, being among the larger islands, probably offer more bang for your buck, but Crete holidays are by far the better option, in my opinion. I’m a bit of an Ancient History nut and I love everything about myths and legends of the Greek and Roman civilizations and knowing that I was standing in the palace that had the famous Labyrinth where legend says the Minotaur was kept was just too much for me to handle in one sitting – I just had to go back there.

In the Baleares, you might not have as much historical and archeological potential, but the beaches and the fun are there. Ibiza holidays are among the most fantastic and fun in the World – the island would be almost hectic if the atmosphere around the ocean weren’t so relaxing. Not everyone is into the club scene, but not to go to Ibiza because of that is a mistake. In fact, the fact that most people go there for the clubs means that beach goers and people that stay out of the big party capitals have more potential to relax and enjoy a casual time near the sea.
