London has a reputation as one of the most expensive cities in the world which makes it hard for travelers to save money during their visit.  It is not an easy feat to find a cheap hotel for your accommodations asthey are in short supply.  But there are ticks to finding those small hotels in London but it takes more then your usual search engine. 

One author of specialized in travel writing tells us that most of the authentic and stylish accommodations are not listed on the typical web sites like orbitz or expedia.   These small and quaint places are family owned and do not have the resources to be listed on the booking sites that most Americans use. 

The trick is to find those smaller websites that are only for certain destinations. For example, travelfish or venere are both sites just for Southeast Asia.  These sites are usually created and run by someone who actually lives in that country.  Guidebooks are another way to find those out of the way places and you can flip through these books at your local library and never even purchase one.  A little time spent on research will be well worth  your effort so can still stay in style away from the big city hotels.
